Halo 3

On Tuesday, the much anticipated third installment of the Halo series was released for XBOX 360. I’m here to offer some initial reactions.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had much of an opportunity to explore the multiplayer features yet. Instead, my roommate and I have been working our way through the campaign.

The story picks up where the second left off, with Master Chief returning to Earth to continue his fight against the Covenant. Playing mostly as second player, I took the role of the Arbiter (a former covenant official converted to the good side), who often is the main target of Alien forces (Grunt yelling “Help, it’s the Arbiter!).

Visually, the game is not much different than Halo 2. The graphics are tweaked for the 360, but the gameplay and feel are virtually identical. This was kind of a letdown for me. I enjoyed the crisp, clean feel of Halo 1 and personally felt that the graphics of Halo 2 (and now Halo 3) were muddled (admittedly, I’m not a true gamer).

The first thing I was impressed by as we went through the campaign was the intelligence of the alien forces. They would develop strategies, attempt to flank, and change positions. On occasions when we had to start a level over, we found that the enemy would be in different formations, making it impossible to simply memorize a level and mow your way through it. There are also some cool added features such as the addition of an item button that allows you to deploy collectible equipment such as a Gravity Lift or Bubble Shield.

The problem is that the human forces that often run alongside the Master Chief are as dumb as the alien forces are smart. I can’t tell you how often I was hit by a grenade thrown by my own men.

It wasn’t until well into the first level that the game was truly put to the test and I stumbled upon a pistol. My fingers trembled as I traded out my plasma rifle and reloaded the weapon. This was the moment that would make or break this game. I pushed B to zoom…Noooo!!! Lo and Behold, I couldn’t shoot the pistol while zoomed in. Damn you, Bungie. You blew it again.

I realize I’m biased. There are many Halo 2 lovers out there who think it’s fun to dual wield a couple of assault rifles, run out in the open and shoot at each other till one player dies. And I can tell you why these people love Halo 2: because they sucked at Halo 1. Because they have no concept of strategy, lack the finesse and fine motor skills necessary to perfect the art of the pistol’s three shot potency, and have found their means of revenge in a fully automatic melee.

Like I said, I haven’t played much multiplayer yet. There is a map editing tool and a match moderation feature known as the Forge (don’t really understand what this means yet). Also, you have the option to record your battles. This could come in handy when I jump down on some unsuspecting fool and slap him in the back of the head. Maybe these features will make multiplayer in Halo 3 really cool.

But I doubt it.

Thanks for reading.

PS I responded to some of yesterday's comments, if you want to check it out. No post tomorrow. I'll be golfing Hazeltine.

DAMN!

I actually had high hopes for HALO 3, and I completely agree Groobs, if you loved HALO 2, you sucked at HALO 1.

I knew the pistol would be back in this game and I was hoping it was more like the original. No zoom? What are they thinking? The pistol is the chief's secret weapon!

I am getting the feeling that they are trying to do too much in these new Halo games. They have taken so many suggestions to try and make 2 and 3 better then the original and consiquently they have forgotten a number of the things that made the first Halo so fun.

This conversation has brought back memories of G-1 Gruber, late night Halo campaign. We dominated that game! It will forever be one of my all time favorites.

I can't believe how ignorant and stubborn you Bethel gomers are. I dare any of you to find an up-to-date review that says Halo 1 is even in the same ballpark as Halo 3 (bad pistol and all). It cannot be done, because every critic in the gaming industry is praising Halo 3 for being as close to perfect as possible, and delivering more than any game ever has before in terms of multiplayer gaming.

On another note, you have remained persistent in your stance that Halo 2 is for people who are bad at Halo 1. I originally thought this as well, as I was more familiar with Halo 1 and wanted to play it all the time when friends at school wanted to play Halo 2.

I am going to quote the true MrMiyagi (from ISU...I'm just a bad poser), who told me that although he could dominate more easily in Halo 1, Halo 2 was in fact a better game once you played it for awhile with an open mind.

Iowa State had a halo intramural tournament that drew in over 300 hardcore gamers. Mr. Miyagi placed third in this tournament, and another person in my fraternity actually won the thing. Both will argue that Halo 2 is better than 1, and I'll assume they will like 3 more than 2.

I say it a lot, but I can't even begin to express how frustrated I get with you wannabes living in the past. I'm not discounting your abilities to shoot pistols from across the board, I'm just saying give something else a chance.

P.S. how are you getting onto Hazeltine? You lucky dog!

I've read the blog and all your comments and still have not a clue what any of you are talking about....All I know is that the four times I played Halo at Pat's I killed chuck like 5 times and even Zot twice. I do my thing with a sniper rifle. Maybe I fall into that category of "no concept of stratagy". Either way, Nicholas Cage can lick a ball...

Halo 1 will forever be the best!

However, I will give Halo 3 the chance that I never gave Halo 2. I am excited to play on XBOX live, and I feel as though it will (maybe) bring back memories of the good ole days....

If not, you will definitely hear my rants about another major let down.

Come on Kevan. You just hate that you get dominated when you play us. You were all excited in the beginning about getting to play Halo then when we whooped up on you, you started whining about how much better Halo 2 is and that you would waste us all. Just excuses for moderate skills at best with the pistol.

To Halo 3. I wouldn't mind that there is no zoom with the pistol in Halo 3 if you could still 3 shot kill everything. But from what I have heard it is a 5 shot to the head and 7 to the body. Waste of time. Takes away the skill. Boring.

I got an idea... maybe we should be able to duel wield machine guns so we can run straight at the other player and mow each other down and see who is the luckiest and survives! Oh yeah, wait, they already thought of that with Halo 2, damn.

Better idea... i could grab the plasma sword and hide behind a corner and kill with one strike anyone who comes close! Shoot, I think they thought of that too!

Learn to use a pistol!

Gosh, I sure hope that Halo 3 at least feels good to play even though it doesn't have the pistol. At least if it had a good gaming feel I would be alright with it.

I never said that I would waste anybody. I'm just saying it may be a game.

Things you are right on though:

The pistol is the ONLY aspect of Halo that takes any skill. Anything else is a waste of time. Especially anything in close combat.

If a 7' tall killing machine shoved a 3' sword up my ass and out my neck, I could probably put a bandaid over it and be OK.

Joe, you're a good man, I like you right now. Pat, you're lucky I don't have a pistol right now, or I'd shoot you at your desk from Minneapolis. Gruber, you too.

I'll be done ranting now.

(I still like you Pat and Grubes)

Oh Kev, I love giving you a hard time. You have the makings to be great with the pistol, it just take a little more time.

I will be giving lessons on the pistol being that I'm the #1 Halo 1 player!

Kevan, I think you are a little out numbered. Even though your comments sounded somewhat promising, the fact of the matter remains that the original Halo does rule.

In most cases whenever you try to make anything better then the original, there is always something (even if it is as small as the three hit kill w/ the pistol) about the original item (game, tool, idea, etc.) that always remains the best and it is impossible to let go of that.

All of us dorks grew up with plaing "system link" of Halo 1 and were addicted for most of sophomore year. I would go as far to say that our grades might have even taken a shallow dip those two semesters. Either way it was worth it and the original cannot be beaten. I miss those days and hope again that I can reunite with Halo 1 players of G-1.

My Quick Post:

I am bored with Halo 1 and i'm cool if we don't play it for a while.

Also, the only reason people don't like Halo 2 and maybe 3 is because they never gave 2 enough of a chance. Since they couldn't dominate 2 right away they just didn't want to keep playing it. They just wanted to go back to the only thing they new (the pistol) and feel like they are a gamer again.

Oh yeah and i guess maybe i am just dumb, but it's odd the pistol would zoom in anyways being that there is no scope on it. And correct me if i am wrong but a real pistol shoot can shoot from the hip, not zoom in.

Towards the end i meant to say that a person who is really good with a pistol should be able to shoot from the hip.

Late night, I must say that I am disappointed that you never commented on the Jack Daniels post from the 19th. I was looking forward to reading you thoughts and memories.

Oh well, maybe you could sneek one in there and let me know.

By the way, this is the 15th post so this is now the new leader for comments on a post!

Pcorcs,
Let me ponder the day we all became Whiskey Connisueres (no I am not going to spellcheck that) and write some thoughts.

Zot and Zotians-

What do you think of Christian Pacifism? I am reading on it and its kickin' my ass. I need some discussion to organize my thoughts...Here is some food for thought...

"Do not repay anyone evil for evil...Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God...If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink...Do not overcome evil by evil means, but overcome evil with good." Romans12:17-21

By the way, I think we hit this topic in the early Zot archives, but I think it was a different passage and on different grounds, Also I think we had half the readers then as we do now....Either way if anyone hs more insight, I'd love to dialogue about this...

Have enjoyable weekends fellow Zotians
